Two people died and two others were injured after a suspected stolen car crashed with another vehicle while a police chase was going on.

Northumbria Police said they were notified of the suspected stolen Volkswagen Golf in Newcastle at about 8:30 am on Sunday.

The vehicle failed to stop when it was asked by the police and made off before striking into a Honda vehicle later on Barrack Road in Newcastle.

Two male occupants of the Volkswagen were pronounced dead at the scene.

The third male occupant of the Volkswagen was admitted to the hospital with serious injuries.

A female occupant of the Honda was hospitalized too.

The road was closed right after the crash and was expected to close for some more hours.

Northumbria Police referred the case to Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
