Two people were killed after a car crashed into another vehicle and then the occupants inside it tried to run across Interstate 805 on Sunday night in National City, California.

A Toyota XA crashed with another vehicle around 8:24 p.m. as the Toyota was heading north on Interstate 805, south of Plaza Boulevard.

A man and a woman were occupants of the Toyota.

It is not clear which person had been driving and which was the passenger.

Both got out of the car after the non-injury crash and then tried to run across the southbound lanes. One of them, the female, was hit by a Chevrolet Silverado and the male was hit by a Mazda sedan, according to California Highway Patrol.

Debris was spread over the freeway and several lanes were closed in both directions as an investigation into the crash continue.
