Volkswagen will extend a suspension on operations at its Puebla production plant located in Mexico to at least until 18 May because of the ongoing coronavirus crisis, the company stated.

The company’s Silao plant in the country is also temporarily closed, and the company said it has not yet figured out when it could restart operations.

The eventual resumption at both plants will be gradual and under stringent hygiene measures, the statement said.

Volkswagen is among manufacturers worldwide who are dealing with a steep fall in demand, as well as supply chain challenges after public health measures adopted by governments to rein in the coronavirus crisis.

About 13,842 people in Mexico have been confirmed as being infected with the coronavirus. The virus has killed 1,305 people in the country.
