Volkswagen AG will roll out eight ID family electric car models in China by 2023, its China chief Stephan Woellenstein stated on Tuesday.

The automaker is making two slightly different ID.4 sport utility vehicles based on its MEB architecture at two Chinese plants.

The models are the first major electric product push from Volkswagen in China to compete with electric vehicle companies such as Tesla Inc to Nio Inc.

China is one of the most important places in Volkswagen’s market. Volkswagen Group delivered over 4.2 million vehicles there in the 2017 financial year.
