2012 Dodge Avenger R/T with styling and chassis upgrades debuts at NYIAS

by Alex

It was but natural of Dodge to go for a touch of sportiness on the revised Avenger sedan after having done so successfully on other models such as the R/T flavored Challenger, Journey, Durango and Grand Caravan, which it had showcased at the Chicago Auto Show in the month of February.

The Avenger R/T is there to be seen at the New York International Auto Show now underway. The car has been given a sportier suspension and the design is also much more aggressive both internally as well as externally. The engine however is the same 283 HP 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine and is connected to the wheels through a six-speed automatic gearbox. Fuel consumption of the car is 19 mpg or 12.38 liter per 100 km in city and 29 mpg or 8.11 liter per 100 km on highway runs, as declared by the company.

The sport suspension is one factor that makes this car distinct from the rest of the Avenger line up. The roll stiffness has been increased by 18 percent and the spring rates by 17 percent as far as the front goes and it is 12 percent for the rear. Damping rates of the front struts have also been increased by 15 percent while the same for the rear struts has gone up by 20 percent. The rear stabilizer bar diameter has been increased by 2 mm, up from 19 mm so that it now stands at 21 mm. With these changes Dodge claims the car has becomes all the more performance oriented.

The other cosmetic changes that have been affected on the car are the body color grille, blacked-out headlights, 18-inch aluminum wheels and model specific decals on the front quarter panels. A spoiler and an R/T badge have been added at the rear of the car. For interior make up the car gets its seats covered in a special cloth material with red stitching and leather trimmed bolsters. The steering wheel is wrapped in perforated leather with red stitching while the center mounted tachometer adds flavor to the instrument panel. Then there are the SRT-inspired brake and accelerator pedal pads as well that also brings in an air of sportiness in the interiors.

The car is fitted with a Boston Acoustic sound system on top of the 276 watt touchscreen entertainment center fitted with a 30-gigabyte hard drive. It is expected that the car would be available for sale by the third quarter of 2011.
