Five people died after a single-car crash in Timaru, New Zealand.
Officials believe that speed played a factor in the crash.
The car was overloaded, and there were improper seats and restraints for the number of occupants.
Officials confirmed multiple deaths in the collision, at the intersection of Seadown Road and Meadows Road in Washdyke, at about 7:20 pm on Saturday.
A resident called 111 at about 6 pm last night in the area to complain about “boy racers” who he claimed were racing.
The crash took place at an intersection just north of Timaru. The car is said to have hit a power pole on Seadown Road.
The area had been well known to boy racers for years.
At about 6 pm, four vehicles were racing around on a mixture of quiet rural roads and industrial streets.
Although it is not confirmed if the crash involved those who had been racing.
Five people were killed and another person was admitted to the hospital.
The driver of the car was admitted to Timaru Hospital in serious condition.
The road is closed as the investigation into the incident is ongoing and drivers were asked to avoid the area.
