We already knew what the M5 Concept from BMW is like thanks to a set of images of the car that had landed up in the public domain. BMW have now come out with their official release which gives details of the sports saloon model. The concept is expected to be on display at the Auto Shanghai 2011 event to be held in China sometime later this month.
There would not be much of a variation between the production model and the concept that would be on display at the event. The production model is expected to be showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show scheduled to be held in the month of September this year.
The new M5 would be fitted with a new twin turbocharged V8 engine. This engine is an upgrade of the 4.4 liter twin turbo V8 which develops 555 HP and 680 NM or 501 lb-ft of torque. Actual figures have not yet been discussed by BMW.
BMW have however disclosed that the V8 which is under development and would be fitted on the new M5 would have a slightly higher power output when compared to the fourth generation of the M5’s 507 HP V10 power unit. Even with the increased power levels BMW is claiming there is a lowering of fuel consumption rates by 25 percent from the previous engine versions.
For power transmission the M5 has a seven speed M double clutch transmission with Drivelogic system which delivers power to the rear set of wheels. The transmission system has been tuned specifically to raise the V8 engines’ performance characteristics. Auto start and stop functions have also been incorporated in the car.
The M5 also gets new set of suspension components which are the inter alia, the wheel suspension systems, specific axle kinematics as well as powerful and weight optimized brakes. For vehicle stability there is the Active M differential incorporated and does so by variation of the locking torque between the right and left drive wheels. The wheels itself are of forged alloy and 20 inch by size. The tires are 265/35 ZR20 at the front and 265/35 ZR20 at the back.
The exterior of the car has been given a discrete appearance while having the M-style front bumper typical of their design. There is also the side grills on the front fenders. The rear bumper is of a different design as it has the integrated diffuser which houses the twin tailpipes on either side, or a barely visible boot lid spoiler.
The concept model that BMW have released photographs about has the windows blacked out thereby giving no inkling of what the car holds in its interior other than the typical M model styling traits such as the sport seats and steering wheel, bespoke interior trim and an M-specific instrument panel.
