Maserati to launch SUV in 2012; will come equipped with Ferrari engine

by Alex

The Kubang was Maserati’s idea of what a SUV should be. They had hoped to introduce this car way back in 2003 which however did not fructify. Rumors started up in 2008 that they had found a new partner in Audi to come out with the SUV. This project too did not see light of the day and now they may have found a new partner in Fiat child Ferrari for continuing their yet unfinished project.

The platform that the SUV is planned to be based om is the same one that was used for the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee and would have the engine from Ferrari. Chrysler Group CEO, Sergio Marchionne, has stated that 2012 is the year that this machine would make it to the market and then it would come with the option of either a V8 or V12 engine.

Ferrari could be using this method for entering the SUV market. With the stiff competition that Porsche Cayenne is posing to Ferrari this shift may turn out quite necessary for Ferrari. A concept version of the Maserati SUV could be expected in the next auto show to be held this year and then production stage would commence in 2012.
