Cars installed with the collision avoidance system which are obviously controlled electronically have been around for a while, however not so successfully. There was the case of Volvo having this system installed with quite disastrous results. Nissan have now announced installing the same on their cars and this heralds not only a forward thrust to this device but also spreads the implementation of this system from luxury to the everyday cars.
The technology is based on radar detecting the obstacles that come in the drive path of the vehicle on which the anti collision system is installed. The distance between the obstacle and the car being driven is computed with the factor of driver reaction time included. Brakes are automatically applied which is controlled by the system depending on these variables. In case of detection of imminent collision the brakes are applied with a full emergency tactic. The speed at which the system is said to be effective by Nissan is 36 mph.
Not only does the system leads to an automatic activation of the braking action but the system also provides for audio as well as visual indications of the warning to the driver. There is also the effect of seat belt tightening which would lead to additional safety of the driver from injury in case the impact does eventually occur.
There is no time frame as yet set by Nissan by which time the innovative technology would be implemented on all its production cars. They have however intimated that this is part of their Safety shield family for aiding drivers who are in “high risk situations.”
There is another technology labeled Moving Object Detection (MOD). This one works with a camera that captures the surrounding region of the car. Upon detection of a moving object in close proximity of the car, there is an audio and video alarm that goes off in the car for bringing it to the notice of the driver and allow him sufficient time to initiate avoidance action.
This one is more of an additional aid to the driver for catering to situation which may have gone unnoticed or during parking in constricted space. The driver is alerted of these objects, both human and others which would only have been noticed had the driver looked over their shoulder while driving.
There is possibility of the MOD being implemented earlier than the Around View Monitor system being an update or later version system.
