Two people died after a car crash in Gulf County, Florida on Monday morning.

It was just after 5 a.m. when a commercial tractor-trailer was traveling south on State Road 71 close to the intersection of Stone Mill Creek Road.

A pickup truck was traveling north on that road as well.

The crash took place when pickup truck failed to observe the oncoming vehicle and attempted to make a left turn onto Stone Mill Creek Road. In an attempt to prevent a crash, troopers said the driver of the tractor-trailer hit his brakes hard and started steering to the right; however, the vehicle struck the right passenger side of the pickup truck.

The truck overturned after the crash.

The driver of the pickup truck and his passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

The highway was closed for 2 hours and was later reopened.
