2012 SSC Ultimate Aero II: the Bugatti Veyron challenger

by Alex

Competition of the “World’s Fastest Production Car” has heated up and there are two strong contenders for it at the moment. The Shelby Super Cars and the Bugatti from Volkswagen makes the battle comparable to the David vs. Goliath event. The Shelby Super Car is a company owned by one single individual who came to lime light with their Ultimate Aero model. This car completed a 256 mph run on a trail that took them across a four-mile-long Texas single carriageway and also had a dogleg bend that necessitated a navigation at ‘just’ 210mph. The Veyron was the other contender and favorite in that event which found itself at the losers end against this surprise entry. Chuck Bigelow at the age of 71 drove the Ultimate Aero and that too with no helmet on as he had no previous driving experience.

The Veyron had to get some prestige back and therefore indulged themselves with the best of the driver and the best of engineers at the call with their Super Sport model taking on the might of the VW’s ultra-modern, ultra-smooth and wide Ehra Lessien test track. Their special 1200 HP edition clocked an impressive 267 mph at the event.

Jerod Shelby, the owner of Shelby super Car works from a garage that is located just behind his house and has a team of sixteen engineers only. Compared to this Bugatti has a massive set of infrastructure and manpower resource at their disposal. The work of Jerod therefore holds greater relevance given this scenario. The latest release is the 1350 HP RWD model which is yet to be given a name.

WOw, the SSC Ultimate Aero II looks amazing. I agree, the SSC Ulimate Aero is an amazing feat of engineering given that the company was only set up 11 years ago. However, I don’t think you can compare it to the Bugatti Veyron – it’s like comparing apples and pears. The Buggatti wasn’t designed just to be a sports car – it was also designed to be luxurious and reliable, something that you don’t normally get with a sports car. However, what I like about the SSC Ultimate Aero, is that it is a raw and beautiful machine – it’s the kind of car you drive for the sheer thrill of hearing the engine roar, rather than comfy leather seats. Personally, if I had the money I would pick the Aero over the Veyron, jsut because I’m a petrol head and I want to be a part of auntomotive history. I think you Yanks get critised far to much about your cars – some of them are pretty cool, espeically the muscle cars.
