Rolls-Royce hybrid with limited range not to the customer’s liking

by Alex

That Rolls Royce is in the process of building an electric version of its Phantom flagship sedan is no more a secret. Ever since the British manufacturer reveled its 102EX Concept at the Geneva Motor Show held in March this year, their intentions became known to all. However, as Rolls Royce CEO Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes points out, customers and layalists of the brand do not have the same opinion as they perhaps believe an electricity driven Rolls Royce might not suit their taste. The manufacturer though might still be seen pursuing with a hybrid model.

The most probable reason for customers to have grown a dislike for a hybrid Phantom is the extremely limited 100 miles range that the car will come with. This will of course not be suitable to them as most of Rolls Royce customers live in the outskirts of major cities. Understandably, a 100 mile range will be crippling to them. CEO Rolls Royce said, “Let’s wait and see what our customers are telling us, but hybrids have a certain capability to deliver both electric driving combined with a normal combustion engine, and that might be a solution.” He also went on to acknowledge that customers had not asked them for an electric version of the Phantom.

The Phantom car in its standard form has a naturally aspirated 6.75 litre V12 engine delivering 453 bhp or 338 kW of power with peak torque being 531 lb ft or 720 Nm, the majority of which, or 413 lb ft or 560 Nm being available at as low as 1000 rpm itself. Acceleration of the car is 5.7 seconds for the 0 to 60 mph or 96 kmph rush and can do the 0 to 100 kmph in 5.9 seconds. As for the Phantom Extended Wheelbase, the car takes 5.9 seconds for the 0 to 60 mph run or 6.1 seconds to reach 100 kmph from zero. Fuel consumption of the car is 18.0 mpg or 15.7 liter per 100 km on the official combined cycle. In case of the Phantom Extended Wheelbase model, fuel consumption figure reads 17.9 mpg or 15.8 liters per 100 km.
